A RAW AND REAL LOOK AT WHAT IT MEANS TO EXIST IN A WORLD THAT YOU DO NOT FIT.

  • the concept.

Breaking the Binary is an ongoing passion project exploring what it means to exist, and ride, in a world that often excludes you. It’s a deep dive into cycling as both a form of freedom and a site of friction: a space that liberates, but one that can also marginalise.

From unwelcoming trails to the challenges of navigating the cycling industry as a non-binary person, Breaking the Binary uncovers the complexities of identity, visibility, and belonging in bike culture. It asks: What does inclusion really look like? And who gets to feel at home on the road, the trail, or in the scene?

  • Build it.

Kickstarting Breaking the Binary was about more than just having a powerful idea, it meant shaping a clear, purposeful vision, building a passionate LGBTQIA+ team, and developing a pitch that could carry real impact.

From the start, it was vital that this story was told by the community it represents. This is our lived experience, and our voices matter. I didn’t just want to create something that earns applause, I wanted to spark real understanding, empathy, and action.

This isn’t about being seen as “brave.” It’s about shifting perspectives and inspiring people to say, “I need to be part of the change.”

  • THe pitch.

In 2025, I pitched Breaking the Binary at Reframing MTB, sharing its vision with an audience ready for change in the mountain biking world. While we’re still actively seeking funding to bring this independent project to life, it remains a story I’m fiercely committed to telling.

No matter how long it takes, Breaking the Binary will be told, because stories like this deserve space, visibility, and action.
